About the Artists:
Barb and Ed Quirie are formally trained artists and teachers with degrees in art and education. They have lived full time up at Snoqualmie Pass for 22 years. Both Ed and Barb have been designers of recent sculptures: Laconia, a historical representation of transportation (Snoqualmie Pass). This was their first large grant throught the U. S. Forest Service, Greenway Trust, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Cycles, an interpretive display of the salmon cycle is part of the Washington native plant garden at Shadow Lake Elementary School in Maple Valley, Washington. This sculpture was funded by grants from the Lummi Native American Group and P. T. A. Other works they have done: a mural at St. Bernard Chapel at Snoqualmie Pass, a mural at Lake Retreat Campus Ministries (and also nearly 100 hand painted signs for the campus grounds-in a uniquely designed rustic font), watercolor cards of wildflowers and Pass scenery, prints of paintings, and original paintings illustrating surrounding trails and ski history of the area. Each year the artists create original works or a series of limited edition prints for local benefit auctions.
Both artists are retired school teachers, Barb having taught 28 years and Ed, 26 years. Barb taught first through fourth grades and also instructed teachers through Seattle Pacific University in bringing art methods and materials into the elementary classroom. She designed art curriculum lessons and kits for the Tahoma School District. Having earlier worked as a commercial artist for The Spokesman Review in Spokane and for Christa Ministries in Seattle, Barb transferred all that creative energy to her classrooms Auburn Christian School and at Shadow Lake Elementary School. Ed is also an accomplished artist having taught metals, art, and photography for many years at Tahoma Jr. High School. Barb and Ed continue to work in paint, metal, wood, and other mixed media to add visual enhancements to their home and community.
Barb and Ed have instructed skiing for 20 years in this region and currently are music ministers for the Chapel of St. Bernard, a year-round local church. Their philosophy: art is a gift from God with which to beautify and improve the community. When you see them on the hiking, biking, or ski trails, they are always collecting more ideas to share with you in their artwork and cards! Contact them at: [email protected] or:
